Ray Markham - Author, Speaker, Teacher, Musician and Test Match Scorer!

raymarkhamPeterborough Christian Ray Markham has had an interesting and varied life as he has followed God’s calling.

Ray was born in Doncaster in 1947 and was always keen on sport, particularly football, rugby, athletics and cricket.  He once played in a schoolboy county rugby match on the Leicester Tigers ground.

When he left school, Ray trained to be a teacher, and was awarded the Bachelor of Education degree by Nottingham University. It was while at Nottingham that he met Sheila, who was also training to be a teacher, and they married in 1970. They have two sons and four grandchildren.

Ray started his teaching career in Billericay before moving to the Jack Hunt School in Peterborough to take on the Head of RE role which he held for 24 years.  During this time he was also Head of Year for 10 years.

Ray & Sheila have always had an active Church life and when they moved to Stamford in 1973 they helped to set up a Pentecostal Elim church there which was supported by the Elim Church at Midland Road Peterborough.

When they moved to Peterborough in 1976 they worshipped at the Elim Church in Midland Road and in 1978 became part of a Church plant in the community centre at Heltwate, North Bretton led by Jeff Lucas where Ray served on the leadership team from 1978 – 94.  The new church building was opened in 1981. Whilst there, Ray wrote many songs, several musicals and drama sketches and was the worship leader, chief musician and singing leader.

In 1994 God gave Ray a vision showing that He had a wider ministry planned for him that was linked with Ray applying for early retirement in 1997 aged just 50.  Ray believed that this wider ministry would involve music, leading worship and drama but no! God brought three unexpected and unlooked for things into his life:

  1. Gideons International, which, besides distributing Scriptures, brought the opportunity to train people how to prepare and talk to students in assemblies and in the classroom and to give talks about the ministry in Churches across the denominations
  2. Cricket scoring at international level – the press box has become his mission field.
  3. Writing books – currently 9 have been published and sold worldwide.  Ray’s books can be purchased on line through Amazon or direct from Ray at ray.sheila@sky.com Topics covered include the miracles and parables of Jesus, the             Sermon on the Mount, the Minor Prophets, and over 180 lesser known Bible characters.

Ray now worships at Bretton Baptist Church, Copeland, and still preaches most Sundays in Churches across the denominations.  If your church would like to invite Ray to come, he can be contacted via the email address above.

Ray enjoys preparing and presenting Bible Study series each lasting 90 minutes.  He has recently delivered a series of seven studies on the Minor Prophets, six on the Sermon on the Mount and he has just started a series of eight studies on the Holy Spirit, which run at Bretton Baptist Church from September 2015 until May 2016.
