Performance of Messiaen La Nativité: 13th Jan

A devotional performance of Messiaen La Nativite (David Humphreys, organ).

When:    Saturday 13th January
Where:   Peterborough Cathedral
Time:      5.30pm - 7.30pm

La Nativité is a part of the Cathedral’s worship during the ongoing celebrations of Christmas and Epiphany.

It consists of nine short musical meditations on aspects of the Christmas story, together with reflections on the meaning of Christ’s incarnation which look forward to his suffering and death.

Messiaen (1908- 1992) was a devout Roman Catholic whose music was deeply infused with spiritual and theological meaning. Each section of La Nativité is preceded by a brief Bible reading, but Messiaen intended his music to leave the listener free to respond ‘out of an overflowing heart’ to the reality of God made flesh.
