Stephen Pattison born 14 September 1953 is professor of Religion Ethics and Practice at the University of Birmingham a position he has held since May 2007. Formerly head of the School of Religious and Theological Studies at the University of Cardiff Professor Pattison received his BA degree in theology and religious studies in 1976 from the University of Cambridge.
In 1978 he received the diploma in pastoral studies with distinction from the University of Edinburgh; in 1982 he received the PhD degree in practical theology from the same university. In addition Dr Pattison holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (MA 1986) and the University of Edinburgh (DLitt in practical theology 2001). He received the MSocSc in public sector management from the University of Birmingham.
Among Dr Pattison’s awards are: Institute of Religion and Medicine Essay Prize (1978); Major State Studentship (1979–1982); elected to International Academy of Practical Theology (1992); and his Gifford lectureship at the University of Aberdeen (2007).
Scheduled to be published in 2007 is Seeing Things: Deepening Relations with Visual Artifact based on his Gifford Lectures. Dr Pattison’s most significant publications are Pastoral Care and Liberation Theology (1994) and Shame: Theory Therapy Theology (2000). Other publications by Dr Pattison include: The Challenge of Practical Theology: Selected Essays (2007); Using the Bible in Christian Ministry: A Workbook with M. Cooling and T. Cooling (2007); and Values in Professional Practice: Lessons for Health Social Care and Other Professionals edited with R. Pill (2004).
Peterborough Theological Society
The Peterborough Theological Society is an ecumenical society, open to anyone, which aims to provide a platform for theological debate which is challenging both to the lay person and to those with theological training.
Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm. There are no meetings in July, August or December.
The annual subscriptions are:
£20 for an individual member
or £30 for couples or families
or £10 for unwaged students.
Attendance at individual meetings is £4
